Samuel Merritt joined the Hoffner Firm, Ltd. in 2015following six years working as a corporate litigation attorney in New York. He has substantial experience representing clients in both civil and criminal matters throughout the state of Minnesota.
Over the past five years, Sam has been assisting clients with criminal matters ranging from DUI and drug possession, to Theft and Assault. He has worked reduce the charges and sentences faced by his clients when appropriate, or to achieve anoutright dismissal when possible. He has worked on defending the licenses of, among others, nurses, doctors, psychologists, psychiatrists, and childcare facilities. Sam has also helped landlords in dealing with evictions and other tenant issues.
Sam is admitted to the State Bar of Minnesota and is a member of the Minnesota Bar Association.

Samuel Merritt has assisted in general criminal defense matters, including DUI, Theft, other misdemeanors and gross misdemeanors and felonies. He has appeared in court with clients and negotiated sentencing recommendations with prosecuting attorneys. Sam has assisted landlords and other property owners in suits against their clients, including, when needed, evictions. He has also represented childcare facilities, nurses, doctors, social workers, psychiatrists, psychologists, and numerous other professionally licensed individuals facing complaints or other threats to their licenses.
General Commercial Litigation
Prior to moving to Minnesota, Sam worked in New York City at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison, LLP and Rubin, Fiorella & Friedman, LLP. He worked in various practice areas, focusing primarily on litigation and arbitration in the insurance and reinsurance industries. His responsibilities included case management for several reinsurance arbitrations, overseeing the production and review of documents in several matters, drafting pre-hearing briefs and legal memoranda, attending client and court conferences, taking and defending depositions, and preparing witness materials and exhibits for use at trial.
Education
Sam received his law degree from Yale Law Schooland his Bachelors of Arts degree in Philosophy and Political Science magna cum laude from Truman State University, in Kirksville, Missouri.
